Korean PDRN Cream vs Serum: Which to Buy, and What PDRN Can Really Do

PDRN cream or serum is a routine decision, not an ingredient contest. Here is what polydeoxyribonucleotide is, why injectable evidence does not transfer to a jar, how size and charge limit topical delivery, how to read percentage claims, and how the Medicube and ANUA sets differ.

Korean PDRN cream versus serum is a routine decision dressed up as an ingredient debate. Both formats carry the same headline molecule — sodium DNA, the cosmetic name for polydeoxyribonucleotide — and in both it faces the same physical obstacle: it is far too large to pass intact skin on its own. What differs is everything around it: the water-to-oil balance, the humectants and emollients, the peptides or hyaluronates riding alongside, and the job the product is meant to do in your sequence. Choose by that job. A serum is the adjustable middle layer; a cream is the finishing layer. Neither format makes PDRN “work harder.”

This guide deepens the decision with the science that should inform it: what PDRN is and where it comes from, why the injectable evidence cannot be transferred to a jar, what molecular weight and charge mean for a topical, how to read concentration claims, and how the two most-bought Korean PDRN sets differ in practice.

What PDRN actually is

Polydeoxyribonucleotide is not a single molecule. Pharmacology reviews describe it as a mixture of deoxyribonucleotide polymers with molecular weights between about 50 and 1,500 kDa, most commonly in the 80–200 kDa band, extracted and purified to more than 95 percent DNA with proteins and peptides inactivated. A 2021 review of 70 studies found the source was Oncorhynchus mykiss (salmon trout) in 40 of them and Oncorhynchus keta (chum salmon) in 29, which is why “salmon DNA” has become shorthand for the whole category. Microbial and plant-derived alternatives now exist, and some brands market a “vegan PDRN” on that basis.

In Korean cosmetic labeling, the ingredient appears as sodium DNA (소듐디엔에이), defined by the Korea Cosmetic Association’s ingredient dictionary simply as “the sodium salt of DNA” with the purpose “skin conditioning agent.” That classification is the honest starting point. It says what the material is and what a cosmetic may claim for it. It does not say that a cream or serum reproduces what a physician achieves with an injection.

Where the “regeneration” reputation comes from — and why it does not transfer

PDRN earned its name in medicine. The proposed mechanism is engagement of the adenosine A2A receptor, which dampens inflammation and supports angiogenesis and fibroblast activity, plus a “salvage pathway” role in which the DNA fragments supply purines and pyrimidines to cells rebuilding tissue. The strongest clinical data concern diabetic foot ulcers: in an eight-week trial of 216 patients, complete closure occurred in 37.3 percent of the PDRN group versus 18.9 percent on placebo. In Korea, PDRN and the closely related polynucleotide injectables are regulated as drugs and medical devices, and a 2025 systematic review of nine studies (219 patients) concluded that injected polynucleotides show promising wrinkle, texture and elasticity outcomes with mild, transient side effects — while noting the evidence is of low to moderate quality and lacks consensus on protocols.

Every one of those results was obtained by putting PDRN past the skin barrier: intramuscular, perilesional or intradermal injection, or application to open wounds. Reviews of the field note that “most studies have injected these compounds directly at the wound site.” A cosmetic applied to intact skin is a different intervention, and both the FDA and the MFDS treat it as one. The FDA’s guidance on wrinkle products is explicit: moisturizing and improving the appearance of lines are cosmetic claims; products “intended to affect the structure or function of the body, such as the skin” are drugs “even if they affect appearance.” Korean brands that describe a PDRN cream as a functional wrinkle-improvement cosmetic have registered it under the MFDS category on the strength of the formula’s tested effect on the look of wrinkles — not as an endorsement of dermal regeneration.

The delivery problem, in numbers

The stratum corneum admits very little by passive diffusion. The widely cited “500 Dalton rule” observes that virtually every topical drug, every transdermal patch drug and every contact allergen is under 500 Da; larger molecules do not cross intact corneal layer. PDRN fragments are one hundred to three thousand times that size. A 2025 study in PMC states the problem plainly: PDRN’s 50–1,500 kDa range “precludes passive diffusion across the stratum corneum,” and its anionic charge (zeta potential around −41 mV in that work) adds electrostatic repulsion that “may limit passive diffusion … and hinder cellular uptake, resulting in poor topical bioavailability.” The same group showed that plasma treatment which shrank the particles toward 10 nm and neutralised the charge raised permeation across an artificial skin model about 10.7-fold — and that a two-week, twice-daily trial of the modified material produced measurable improvements in roughness and gloss.

The lesson for shoppers is two-sided. Ordinary cosmetic PDRN mostly stays at the surface, where it behaves as a large hydrating polymer, a film-former and a conditioner — real, but modest, effects. Formulas that claim to solve delivery do so through smaller fractions, encapsulation, charge modification or a physical enhancer such as the spicule carriers explained in our Reedle Shot science article. Texture tells you nothing about any of this: a thin serum spreads more easily than a cream, but ease of spread is not depth of delivery.

Serum or cream: what each format is built to do

A serum is a water-dominant system. Humectants — glycerin, several molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, sometimes betaine or panthenol — hold water at the surface; supporting actives such as niacinamide, peptides or adenosine give it a cosmetic purpose beyond hydration; a light polymer or silicone may improve slip. Its role is to add hydration or an active step before a moisturizer, and to disappear under sunscreen or makeup.

A cream is an emulsion with a meaningful oil phase. Emollients (squalane, plant oils, esters), barrier lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) and occlusives (dimethicone, petrolatum-type materials, waxes) slow water loss and change how the skin feels for hours. Its role is to finish the routine. PDRN in a cream sits in the water phase of that emulsion; the oil phase does not carry it deeper, it simply keeps the surface comfortable for longer.

Reading concentration claims without being misled

Korean listings increasingly state a PDRN percentage — 1 percent, 4 percent, occasionally “high-purity” with no figure. Three cautions apply. First, percentage refers to the sodium DNA raw material as supplied, which may itself be a dilute solution; two “1 percent” products can contain different amounts of actual DNA. Second, the molecular-weight distribution is almost never disclosed, and a lower-weight fraction behaves differently from a high-weight one both in feel and in what little penetrates. Third, percentage says nothing about the delivery system. A 4 percent ampoule with no penetration strategy and a 1 percent serum built around microcapsules or a spicule carrier are not comparable by number.

That said, disclosed figures are still better than none. A brand willing to print a percentage is making a checkable statement, and a higher figure in a water-based ampoule does at least mean more of the conditioning polymer at the surface. Treat the number as one line on the label, read next to the humectants, the peptides and the fragrance position.

The two sets most people compare

Its serum page lists salmon-derived sodium DNA with seven hyaluronate forms — hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate, hydroxypropyltrimonium hyaluronate, potassium hyaluronate, sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer and sodium acetylated hyaluronate — plus hydrolyzed collagen in a microcapsule “Capsule 100” delivery. ANUA’s own test figures are hydration measures after a single use (an 8.93 percent rise in a moisture-plumping index and 24.64 percent in a deep-hydration index, sample size not disclosed). Those are short-term surface numbers, which is exactly what a hyaluronate-rich serum should deliver. The matching cream adds squalane and niacinamide for a comfortable finish. Choose it when dehydration and a dewy look matter more than a peptide story.

For a stand-alone finishing layer rather than a set, a soothing PDRN cream built on ceramides and panthenol is a sensible closing step on rest nights, especially for skin that has been through acids or a spicule essence earlier in the week.

How to slot PDRN into a routine

  1. Serum goes after cleansing and toner, before moisturizer, morning or night. Two or three drops, pressed in, one minute before the next layer.
  2. Cream goes last, or before an occlusive on very dry nights. At night it can replace a separate moisturizer entirely.
  3. Pair with a physical enhancer deliberately, not by default. A spicule essence used first, on its own night, is the one common routine where PDRN’s delivery problem is genuinely addressed; follow it with the serum, not with both serum and cream.
  4. Do not stack PDRN products expecting additive results. Surface conditioning saturates quickly; a second PDRN layer adds cost and fragrance load, not depth.

Sensitivity, provenance and who should be careful

Purified PDRN is well tolerated; the medical literature reports minimal immunogenicity because proteins and peptides are removed during extraction. In cosmetics, reactions are far more likely to come from fragrance, essential oils, botanical extracts or preservatives elsewhere in the formula than from sodium DNA. People with fish allergy have no documented reason to react to purified DNA, but those who prefer to avoid fish-derived ingredients for that or ethical reasons should look for products that name a microbial or plant source rather than assuming “PDRN” means vegan. Pregnancy raises no specific concern for topical sodium DNA, though the usual advice to keep routines simple applies. And nothing in a cream or serum substitutes for a clinician’s assessment if the goal is treating scars, atrophy or a wound.

The decision, then, is not which format contains “better” PDRN. It is which texture you will use consistently, which supporting ingredients match your actual concern, and whether your routine has a genuine gap for the product to fill. Frequently Asked Questions

Is PDRN in a cream or serum the same as a PDRN injection?

No. The regenerative and wrinkle evidence for PDRN comes from injected or medical-grade products that bypass the skin barrier and act on adenosine A2A receptors. Cosmetic sodium DNA is applied to intact skin, where its 50 to 1,500 kDa size and negative charge keep most of it at the surface. Regulators classify the two very differently, and their results should not be assumed to match.

Does a serum deliver PDRN deeper than a cream?
