Chunhyangjeon

Overview

A Masterpiece of Traditional Korean Narrative Literature
The Elegance of the Korean Language in Vivid Descriptions and Expressions
A National Literary Classic, Continuously Reimagined Across Generations

“Love, love, my love. My cherished love. From every angle, my love is beautiful. Oh, my precious love, my delightful love.”

Chunhyangjeon is a timeless gem born from the rich tradition of Korean narrative literature. This classic work incorporates elements from widely known folk tales, including the tales of secret royal inspectors, loyalty, and fidelity, as well as influences from romance novels such as Sukhyangjeon. Additionally, it draws inspiration from the renowned Chinese classical poetry and historical anecdotes that permeated East Asian culture during the Joseon dynasty. The frequent use of classical references and poetic verses enhances the narrative’s vividness and rhetorical finesse, making Chunhyangjeon a masterpiece that both preserves and transcends the traditions of Korean storytelling.

A National Treasure

As one of Korea’s most celebrated literary works, Chunhyangjeon holds a special place in the hearts of Koreans. It is a story known to nearly everyone, young and old. First popularized in the 19th century, its appeal remains undiminished today. Notably, Korea’s first opera was based on Chunhyangjeon, and the story has been adapted into films over 12 times in the relatively short history of Korean cinema. This enduring classic continues to inspire reinterpretations across various mediums, including musicals, movies, and television dramas. Furthermore, its related pansori performance, Chunhyangga, has been recognized by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

A Modern Edition

This edition of Chunhyangjeon is based on the Yeolnyeo Chunhyang Sujeolga 84-chapter version from the Jeonju woodblock prints and the 30-chapter version from the Gyeongpan woodblock prints. The 84-chapter version, part of the Byeol Chunhyangjeon series, underwent repeated revisions and refinements in the 19th century and is regarded as one of the most artistically accomplished versions, along with Namwon Gosa. It vividly captures the vibrancy of Chunhyangjeon, making it a definitive edition for modern readers. Additionally, this book includes a reproduction of the woodblock print edition of Yeorye Chunhyang Sujeolga.

Excerpt

“Unable to contain his joy, Yi Mongryong spread out paper, ground ink on the dragon stone inkstone, and dipped a yellow-haired brush generously into the ink. In a single stroke, he wrote the following pledge:”

“On this day, I, Yi Mongryong, make an everlasting vow before Chunhyang. We met by chance at Gwanghallu Pavilion, where I found my predestined match, and I cannot suppress my love. Let this document serve as proof of our promise to unite in marriage. Should I ever break this vow, use this document to report me to the authorities.”
