Overview of “In the Starlight”

“In the Starlight,” a groundbreaking graphic novel first published in 1987, combines elements of romance and science fiction in a way that was novel for its time. This series has been influential in shaping the archetype of the dark-haired romantic hero and the proactive heroine who shapes her own fate, themes that continue to resonate in many works today.

Created by Kang Kyeong-ok, the story revolves around the life of 17-year-old Yoo Shin-hye, capturing deep themes of fate, the universe, and love. Kang’s ability to direct the narrative with precision and convey emotions with subtlety marks this as a defining work in her career. The unexpected and impactful ending of the story garnered a dedicated fanbase and widespread acclaim upon its release, making it a favorite in the Haksan Cultural History’s collection.

Plot Summary

Set in the year before the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the story follows Yoo Shin-hye, a high school student with a passion for astronomy. Her life takes a thrilling turn when she agrees to host Sarah, a foreign exchange student, and her bodyguard Radion. Initially believed to possess supernatural powers, it is later revealed that Sarah is an alien from the planet Copion, and a princess in hiding after being evacuated to Earth.

The plot thickens as it becomes clear that without conclusive evidence of her royalty, Sarah cannot return to Copion and is pursued by enemies determined to end her line. As Shin-hye grows closer to Radion and worries for Sarah’s safety, she begins to experience mysterious symptoms and worsening insomnia, hinting at greater cosmic connections.

About the Author: Kang Gyeong-ok

10 reviews for In the Starlight 6

  1. Wren Portland, USA

I liked how the story had relatable characters. The artwork is amazing too and really fits the tone of each scene. I received it quickly, which was nice for a change. It keeps your interest right till the end.

  2. Olivia New York, USA

Really engaging graphic novel. Loved how the characters developed throughout the story. The art style is unique and stands out nicely.

  3. Elsa Örebro, Sweden

Läste den på en söndag och gillade verkligen historien. Karaktärerna känns äkta, särskilt huvudpersonen som är tuff men sårbar. Bra papperkvalitet också.

  4. Hassan Alami from Paris, France

  5. Astrid Thorsen from Oslo, Norway

Amidst shimmering stars, ‘In the Starlight’ unfurls an enchanting tale where heartbeats echo against vast cosmic waves. Soren experiences romance and fate interwoven seamlessly through delicate brushstrokes.

  6. Fleur Utrecht, Netherlands

Fleur: Deze graphic novel is best leuk, vooral de romance en sci-fi mix. Had alleen verwacht dat het iets dikker was. Echt jammer van de kleur op omslag die wat anders leek online.

  7. Ethan New York, USA

Interesting mix of romance and sci-fi. The plot grabbed my attention, but the ending was confusing. Not as many illustrations in the first half compared to other graphic novels I’ve read.

  8. Nolan Denver, USA

In the Starlight is an interesting read. I liked how it combines romance and sci-fi elements together. The character development was solid, especially for Yoo Shin-hye as she shapes her fate throughout the story. It arrived quickly too, which made starting it even better.

  9. Lucinda Faraday from Toronto, Canada

Transportive and beautifully crafted, ‘In the Starlight’ presents an exquisite juxtaposition of love’s power against the cosmic backdrop. Kang Kyeong-ok elegantly intertwines poignant storytelling with deeply human conflicts in a unique landscape.

  10. Akira Temasek from Tokyo, Japan

Kang Kyeong-ok’s ‘In the Starlight’ explores youth’s vulnerability amid cosmic forces, forging deep connections between love and destiny in a vivid narrative journey. A timeless reflection.
