Sky, Wind, Star, and Poem is the only poetry collection by Yun Dong-ju, a poet renowned for his profound self-reflection and lyrical expression during a dark period in Korean history. This collection gathers poems that express Yun Dong-ju’s deep love for his people and his earnest hope for independence, all conveyed through evocative and gentle language.
Originally compiled in 1941 as a self-selected anthology to commemorate his graduation from Yonhui College, Yun Dong-ju was unable to publish it at the time. He later revised the title to Sky, Wind, Star, and Poem and personally prepared three parts, gifting copies to his mentors. The collection was finally published posthumously in 1948, based on the handwritten manuscript preserved by his friend Jeong Byeong-uk.
The poems in this collection reflect Yun Dong-ju’s sense of loss regarding his homeland, his existential struggles, and his determination in the face of adversity. Recurring imagery of darkness and night throughout the works captures the despair, fear, and sorrow of the era, while also highlighting the poet’s lyrical sensibility. Yun Dong-ju’s writing incorporates Christian values, a longing for independence, and a unique perspective on the world seen through the eyes of youth.
This edition follows the cover design of the 1955 Jeongeumsa edition and preserves the original text. Explanatory notes are included for archaic or difficult words to aid reader understanding.
