Story

Resources are scarce on Kirishi Island, and the islanders resent Michael and Lisa for sharing food and medicine with Mia and her companions. The islanders also know Mia is a mermaid. They fear that if Sol makes a surprise inspection and finds her, they will be punished too. In the end, one of them decides to act: “Outsiders have broken in. I want to report them.”

Mia lost her fins when she fell in love with a human and became human herself. Now she travels to find a way to become a mermaid again. Instead, she finds a hopeless sea full of mermaids who were once her friends and have turned into savage monsters. Can Mia learn the secret of the curse and safely return to mermaid form? Dahong’s soft, rounded art style is paired with a tense plot that turns the fairy-tale mermaid into the center of an apocalyptic world.

About the Author

Dahong debuted with Dam in the Forest, a winner of the first Naver Webtoon Greatest Contest on Earth. That series won the Grand Prize in the comics/webtoon category at the 2021 SF Awards and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award in the comics category at the 2023 Korea Content Awards. Even If I Become Sea Foam is Dahong’s next series, taking the healing-apocalypse genre from the forest to the sea.
