석조전은 대한제국 시대에 한국의 근대화와 독립에 대한 열망의 상징으로 서 있습니다. 영국 건축가 존 레지널드 하딩이 설계했으며, 건설에는 10년(1900–1910)이 걸렸습니다. 신고전주의 양식으로 지어진 이 서양식 궁전에는 웅장한 홀, 접견실, 식당, 황제의 개인 침실이 있었습니다.
원래 대한제국 궁궐의 본관으로 지어진 석조전은 이후 박물관, 미술관, 역사적인 회의 공간으로 사용되어 한국 근대사에서 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 수년간의 훼손 끝에 문화재청의 복원 프로젝트를 통해 예전의 영광을 되찾았습니다. 2014년부터 석조전은 대한제국 역사관으로 일반에 공개되었습니다.

석조전이 있는 덕수궁은 깊은 역사적 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 원래 임진왜란 당시 임시 궁궐로 사용되었으며, 이후 광해군이 공식적으로 이름을 지으면서 경운궁이 되었습니다. 1897년 고종황제는 러시아 공사관에서 이곳으로 거처를 옮겨 대한제국의 왕실 거주지가 되었습니다.
고종황제는 덕수궁을 서양 건축 요소를 통합한 근대적이고 독립적인 국가의 궁궐로 구상했습니다. 그러나 그의 통치는 일본의 압력으로 1907년에 강제로 퇴위하면서 단절되었습니다. 그 후 궁궐은 "미덕의 장수 궁궐"이라는 의미의 덕수궁으로 이름이 바뀌었습니다.
