석조전 象徵著大韓帝國時期韓國對現代化和獨立的渴望。由英國建築師John Reginald Harding設計，其建造歷時十年（1900–1910）。這座受西方啟發的宮殿以新古典主義風格建造，設有宏偉的大廳、接待室、用餐區和皇帝的私人房間。
석조전 最初 intended 作為大韓帝國宮殿的主要大廳，後來成為博物館、美術館和歷史會議場所——在韓國現代歷史中發揮了關鍵作用。經過多年的惡化，韓國文化遺產管理局的修復項目使其恢復了昔日的輝煌。自 2014 年以來，석조전 作為大韓帝國歷史博物館向公眾開放。
德壽宮遺產的一部分
석조전 所在的德壽宮具有深厚的歷史意義。最初在壬辰倭亂期間用作臨時宮殿，後來在光海君正式命名時成為慶運宮。1897 年，高宗皇帝從俄羅斯公使館遷居至此，使其成為大韓帝國的皇家住所。
高宗皇帝將德壽宮設想為現代、獨立國家的宮殿，融合了西方建築元素。然而，在日本的壓力下，他於1907 年被迫退位，他的統治被縮短。當時宮殿被更名為德壽宮，意思是「美德長壽的宮殿」。
