Seokjojeon Mug – A Timeless Tribute to the Korean Empire
Capture the beauty and history of Seokjojeon, the iconic neoclassical palace of the Korean Empire, with this elegant mug. Designed to reflect both the day and night views of Seokjojeon, this mug brings a piece of Korea’s royal heritage into your daily life.
Seokjojeon – The Dream of a Sovereign Nation
Seokjojeon stands as a symbol of Korea’s aspiration for modernity and independence during the Korean Empire. Designed by British architect John Reginald Harding, its construction spanned a decade (1900–1910). Built in the neoclassical style, this Western-inspired palace featured grand halls, reception rooms, a dining area, and the emperor’s private chambers.
Originally intended as the main hall of the Korean Empire’s palace, Seokjojeon later served as a museum, an art gallery, and a historic meeting space—playing a crucial role in modern Korean history. After years of deterioration, a restoration project by the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration brought it back to its former glory. Since 2014, Seokjojeon has been open to the public as the Korean Empire History Museum.
A Piece of Deoksugung’s Legacy
Deoksugung Palace, where Seokjojeon stands, holds deep historical significance. Originally used as a temporary palace during the Imjin War, it later became Gyeongungung when King Gwanghaegun officially named it. In 1897, Emperor Gojong relocated here from the Russian legation, making it the royal residence of the Korean Empire.
Emperor Gojong envisioned Deoksugung as a modern, independent nation’s palace, integrating Western architectural elements. However, his reign was cut short when he was forced to abdicate in 1907 under Japanese pressure. It was then that the palace was renamed Deoksugung, meaning "Palace of Virtuous Longevity."
Seokjojeon, with its striking architectural beauty, and the royal plum blossom emblem (the symbol of the Korean Empire) have been reimagined into cultural products—allowing modern audiences to connect with Korea’s imperial history.
