自分の気持ちとは裏腹に、マンボクはいつも悪い言葉や行動をしてしまいます。もちろん、同級生たちはそんなマンボクを避ける傾向にあります。そんなある日、マンボクは帰り道に奇妙なお餅屋さんを見つけます。それは「マンボクのお餅屋さん」です。マンボクは自分と同じ名前に魅了され、お餅屋さんの甘くて香ばしい匂いに惹かれます。しかし、それぞれのお餅には奇妙な値札が付いています！風餅を食べるには、二つの良いことをする必要があり、ヨモギ餅を食べるには、42人の子供たちの笑いが必要です。今まで良いことをしたことがないマンボクは、どうせ誰もいないだろうと思い、こっそりお餅を手に取りますが、なんと、お餅は目の前で消えてしまいます。
マンボクはお餅を食べるために、数え切れないほどの良いことを始めます。もち米のお餅を食べた後、マンボクは悪いことを言うのをやめ、黙って友達を助け、二つの良いことをすると、笑わせてくれる風餅を食べることができました。このように、お餅を食べることで得られる魔法の力は、マンボクがまた別の良いことをするための触媒となります。また、重要なのは、その変化をもたらすのは、結局のところ、マンボク自身の意志であるということです。お餅の代金を払い、食べたいお餅を食べるという欲求から良いことを始めますが、実はお餅はただの言い訳に過ぎません。マンボクは、自分の心とは違う言葉や行動に悩み、最終的には、お餅のように柔らかく温かい変化を、一歩ずつ自分で作り上げていく様子を見せてくれます。
