Album Introduction

Seo Eun-young’s Gayageum Sanjo, “Singwanyongryu,” is her debut gayageum sanjo album.

About Shin Gwan-yong Gayageum Sanjo

The Shin Gwan-yong style was developed by Shin Gwan-yong (real name Shin Gwan-yeong) in Korea’s Jeolla Province. Today, it is preserved and performed by Kang Soon-young, Cultural Heritage No. 25 of Gyeongsangnam-do, and Kang Jeong-yeol, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 23.

Unlike most sanjo styles that begin with the sangcheong (10th string) in ujo mode, Shin Gwan-yong-ryu starts with the hacheong (4th string) in gyemyeonjo mode. Each rhythmic cycle also begins on the hacheong note, making it unique among gayageum sanjo traditions.

Musical Characteristics

  • Modal Structure: Primarily follows gyemyeonjo, creating a deep and expressive tonal atmosphere.

  • Melodic Flow: Features sudden and frequent melodic changes within the same rhythmic cycle.

  • Distinctive Sound: Rarely uses the 12th string, expanding expressive possibilities across the instrument.

Seo Eun-young’s Journey

Seo Eun-young studied Shin Gwan-yong gayageum sanjo under Kang Jeong-yeol in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province. She has since performed the complete Shin Gwan-yong version in her solo concert, showcasing her mastery of this rare and traditional style.

This album captures Seo Eun-young’s deep interpretation of the Shin Gwan-yong lineage, offering listeners a refined balance of tradition and personal artistry.
