What is Yutnori?

Yutnori is a beloved traditional Korean folk game, enjoyed during holidays like Seollal (Lunar New Year) and other family gatherings. Played between two teams, it combines strategy and luck, offering an exciting experience for players of all ages.

Basic Rules

• Each team takes turns throwing the four Yut sticks.

• Depending on how the sticks land, the results dictate how far a token (mal) can move:

  • Do (Pig): 1 space
  • Gae (Dog): 2 spaces
  • Gul (Sheep): 3 spaces
  • Yut (Cow): 4 spaces
  • Mo (Horse): 5 spaces

• If your token lands on an opponent’s token, you send them back to the starting line and earn another turn.

• Tokens from the same team can be grouped to move together, but this makes them vulnerable to capture.

• The first team to move all their tokens around the board and reach the finish wins!

How to Play

1. Form two teams with an equal number of players.
2. Decide the starting team by throwing the Yut sticks. The highest score goes first.
3. Teams alternate turns, throwing the sticks and moving their tokens accordingly.
4. Earn bonus throws by scoring Yut or Mo during a turn.
5. Strategize carefully to move your tokens efficiently and block your opponents!
