Master Kang Jeong-suk Releases Seo Gong-cheol-style Gayageum Sanjo Album Inyeon
Master Kang Jeong-suk, a prominent figure in contemporary Korean folk music, has released her new album Inyeon, featuring Seo Gong-cheol-style Gayageum Sanjo. This style, originating from the Han Suk-gu school of music, stands as one of the two great traditions of sanjo alongside that of Kim Chang-jo, the renowned founder of the genre. Seo Gong-cheol’s lineage holds a vital place in the history and evolution of sanjo.
Having studied directly under Han Suk-gu, Master Kang not only inherited Seo Gong-cheol’s melodies but also enriched them with her own creative interpretations. In particular, she expanded the hwimori movement, presenting it in a far more diverse and dynamic manner than in the original style. Recognized as a holder of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 23 (Gayageum Sanjo and Byeongchang), Master Kang continues to play a central role in preserving and innovating within this tradition.
Through this album, listeners can fully experience the essence of Seogongcheolryu Sanjo, a style still transmitted solely through oral tradition and renowned for its improvisational strength. Inyeon is both a preservation of heritage and a testament to the living, evolving spirit of sanjo.

Yo, I just got my hands on the album ‘Inyeon’ by Master Kang Jeong-suk—OMG, it’s like nothing I’ve heard before! This isn’t just your regular traditional music. The Gayageum sounds she pulls out are incredible and kinda give me chills sometimes? You can totally feel her spin on Seo Gong-cheol’s stuff; she’s seriously making these melodies dance off the strings in a way that feels fresh and exciting! I’m sitting here sipping some matcha in NYC when all of a sudden it feels like we’re at this vibrant festival instead—all those colorful nuances truly take you places. Big up to her for bringing new vibes into such an old tradition!

At first glance, Master Kang Jeong-suk’s album ‘Inyeon’ seems to challenge my understanding of traditional Gayageum sanjo. The intricate nuances derived from Seo Gong-cheol’s lineage left me a bit hesitant, as contemporary interpretations often feel disjointed. However, I found myself irresistibly drawn into the ebb and flow of her pieces; they exude an air of spontaneity while maintaining deep respect for tradition. It is almost like witnessing a bridge between epochs—an expression that resonates with both nostalgic essence and modern creativity. Every strum seemed imbued with stories long silenced yet vividly portrayed in harmonious dialogue today. Ultimately, this fusion beckons not only seasoned listeners but invites newcomers warmly into Korea’s rich musical tapestry.
