Book introduction-Korean version
“Good night! Let’s do something that will destroy the world with crazy people.”
A heart-pounding bout of children who have lined up to achieve their true dreams!
At the beginning of summer, after a group of sadang gangs came to the village, there was no end to the heinous things happening to the village. Every night, suspicious footsteps are heard in Seonangdang, a man dressed as a man with a woman’s face wanders around, and a tightrope walker dressed as a tiger appears in the market place. Eventually, Lady Cho-ok, the richest family in the village, is kidnapped by bandits on her way to the temple. The whole village lamented the tragedy of the kind-hearted mistress. No one noticed the sadang plaque that suddenly disappeared in the midst of the commotion. What is the truth behind all of this?
“The Case of Missing Yun Cho-ok” is a story of a proper ‘fight’ between children who are pointed at by the world just because they have an extraordinary dream. Although he was born as the son of a leader of the sadang troupe, Lee Hae enjoyed secretly putting on makeup rather than walking on a tightrope. Cho-ok dreams of being free from the things that oppress her because she is both a noblewoman and a woman. Hong-dan has an aspiration to raise the family by playing the geomungo. The three children, who are very different in status and situation, become the only friends and helpers who understand each other with the desire to do what they really like. The friendship, sympathy, and courage to risk everything you like makes the reader’s heart flutter. To many children who feel frustrated or taken for granted by the decisions made by society and adults, I am thrilled to think about who they are and what they want.

Set against a backdrop that captures the whimsical essence of bygone summers, ‘Yun Cho-ok’s Disappearance’ ignites an evocative journey filled with unexpected turns and pulse-racing stakes. This gripping narrative taps into rich traditions while expertly threading social themes; it mirrors regional stories where local customs confront pressing realities. Through ethereal folklore combined with psychological intensity, readers traverse foggy nights tangled in illusions of tiger tightrope walkers weaving through villagers lost in desperation and hopes long buried beneath mystery’s heavy mantle.

As shadows stretched across Brooklyn’s rooftops, a sudden hush enveloped my friends and me. Summer nights spun tales of loss beneath vibrant streetlights; yet in ‘Yun Cho-ok’s world,’ every tale became our own, tangled with unexpected horrors.

In ‘Yun Cho-ok’s Disappearance’, one cannot help but be captivated by the dance between despair and whimsical folklore. A vivid tapestry weaves through this village steeped in surreal terror, where ordinary lives are haunted by peculiar intruders—thieves dressed as harbingers of calamity mix with magical performers in twilight markets. As I journeyed through these pages filled with palpable emotions and spine-tingling mystery, an echo from my own rich South American traditions stirred within me: the masks of la Llorona interspersing fear within celebrations. This novel entwines layers of communal sorrow that resonate globally, embracing how unending courage manifests when our darkest moments approach.

Salut!
